Connecting 80+ locations to the cloud with SD-WAN

Contributing to a Cisco SD-WAN Cloud OnRamp architecture that routed traffic by application and helped cut cloud networking operating cost by 20%.

My role
Contributed to the design and implementation, including cost modeling and application-aware routing.
Context
More than 80 hybrid locations needed reliable, cost-effective connectivity to cloud-hosted applications.
Decision
Adopt a Cisco SD-WAN Cloud OnRamp architecture with application-aware routing.
Results
  • 80+ locations connected
  • 20% lower cloud networking operating cost
  • Better application performance and network resilience

The problem

As applications moved to the cloud, traffic from more than 80 sites had to reach them reliably. Treating every packet the same way wastes bandwidth on low-priority traffic and leaves critical applications exposed when a link degrades.

The approach

I contributed to the design and implementation of a Cisco SD-WAN Cloud OnRamp architecture. My part included cost modeling and application-aware routing: steering each application’s traffic over the path best suited to it rather than a single default route.

The result

The architecture improved application performance and network resilience across the hybrid locations, and helped achieve a 20% reduction in cloud networking operating expenses.
